The Hub and Spoke model is how most major airlines operate. Instead of flying direct from every city to every other city (which is inefficient), they route traffic through a central "Hub".
For example, Iberia uses Madrid (MAD) as a hub. To go from Vigo to New York, you fly Vigo -> Madrid -> New York.
